/>

BERLIN (Reuters) - The Guinness Book of World Records has ruled that a church steeple in Germany, not the famous leaning tower of Pisa, is the most tilted tower in the world.

The 25.7-metre steeple tilts at an angle of 5.07 degrees, while the tower of Pisa tilts at just 3.97 degrees, said Olaf Kuchenbecker, head of Guinness's German edition.

"When you lay photos of the two next to each other you can see it relatively clearly," Kuchenbecker said.

The new record, scheduled to appear next autumn in the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, could strip the Pisa tower of its iconic status, Kuchenbecker said.

link to <a Institute of Technology is suing renowned architect Frank Gehry, alleging serious design flaws in the Stata Center, a building celebrated for its unconventional walls and radical angles.

The school asserts that the center, completed in spring 2004, has persistent leaks, drainage problems and mold growing on its brick exterior. It says accumulations of snow and ice have fallen dangerously from window boxes and other areas of its roofs, blocking emergency exits and causing damage.

The suit says MIT paid Los Angeles-based Gehry Partners $15 million to design the Stata Center, which cost $300 million to build. It houses labs, offices, classrooms and meeting rooms.

link to full article

Theory and Practice

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. Two long shore-like lips of rock in the planet's northern hemisphere were thought to be the best evidence, but experts argued that they were too "hilly" to describe the smooth edges of ancient oceans.

The view just changed dramatically with a surprisingly simple breakthrough.

The once-flat shorelines were disfigured by a massive toppling over of the planet, scientists announced today. The warping of the Martian rock has hidden clear evidence of the oceans, which in any case have been gone for at least 2 billion years.

"This really confirms that there was an ocean on Mars," said Mark Richards, a planetary scientist at the University of California at Berkeley and co-author of the study, which is detailed in the June 14 issue of the journal Nature.
How to be creative in architecture

Another manifesto...

Being an architect in and of itself is supposedly a creative endeavor. But, it's not. The business model, the approach - not creative. It has become a commodity. Architects undercut each other to the point of insanity, creating a "low-baller's profession". The good architects transcend all of this. Joe Schmoe will not undercut Daniel Libeskind. You have to be creative, not just in your designs, but in your approach and mentality.

link to <a process…obviously, let’s not overlook the basics like the actual project itself, and more importantly, if not more obviously, the money to pay for the project…

The client project team also provides critical input, decision making, political support, etc…all of which have a dramatic impact on the possible success or failure of a project…

Reviewing the level of input with the client before the project starts will allow both the client and the consultant to have a clear understanding of what is required, or maybe more importantly, differences in opinions about what is required.

Even more importantly, reviewing the expected input to a project with a possible client may give you a clearer view of whether or not the prospective client shares your attitudes about what it takes from each party to make a project successful…something which is better found out before a project starts, not afterwards…
Santa Science

Relativity Clouds???...

This is a good counterpoint to the typical engineering analysis that kills the fun...

Don’t believe in Santa Claus?

If you’re skeptical of Santa’s abilities to deliver presents to millions of homes and children in just one night, North Carolina State University’s Dr. Larry Silverberg, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, can explain the plausible science and engineering principles that could allow the Jolly Old Elf to pull off the magical feat year after year.

With his cherubic smile and twinkling eyes, Santa may appear to be merely a jolly old soul but he and his North Pole elves have a lot going on under the funny-looking hats, Silverberg says. Their advanced knowledge of electromagnetic waves, the space/time continuum, nanotechnology, genetic engineering and computer science easily trumps the know-how of contemporary scientists.

Silverberg says that Santa has a personal pipeline to children’s thoughts – via a listening antenna that combines technologies currently used in cell phones and EKGs – which informs him that Mary in Miami hopes for a surfboard, while Michael from Minneapolis wants a snowboard. A sophisticated signal processing system filters the data, giving Santa clues on who wants what, where children live, and even who’s been bad or good. Later, all this information will be processed in an onboard sleigh guidance system, which will provide Santa with the most efficient delivery route.

Silverberg adds that letters to Santa via snail mail still get the job done, however.

Silverberg is not so naïve as to think that Santa and his reindeer can travel approximately 200 million square miles – making stops in some 80 million homes – in one night. Instead, he posits that Santa uses his knowledge of the space/time continuum to form what Silverberg calls “relativity clouds.”

“Based on his advanced knowledge of the theory of relativity, Santa recognizes that time can be stretched like a rubber band, that space can be squeezed like an orange and that light can be bent,” Silverberg says. “Relativity clouds are controllable domains – rips in time – that allow him months to deliver presents while only a few minutes pass on Earth. The presents are truly delivered in a wink of an eye.”

link to full article

Another Manifesto...

I really like this one...and you thought only architect's wrote manifestos...

Making the most of your time

You can’t manage time. was coming along on vacation…

We vacationed at the Jersey shore when I was growing up…lots of great memories…

Now we take our kids to the shore and we do some of the same stuff that I remember doing as a kid…I hope to pass along some of the memories…among other things, like time at the beach, crabbing, and fishing, I have vivid memories of watching the sun set over the bay…

To this day, this is still one of my one of my favorite things to do down the shore…

That brings us to the label design idea…since the wine was coming along on vacation with us…

I had wanted to photograph the wine with the sun setting in the background…I was thinking it could make a great wine label…I wanted to provide an example of customers taking pictures of the wine doing their favorite thing…and having these pictures become label art for Stormhoek…

Unfortunately, it became a case of “good idea, questionable execution”…the porch wasn’t quite facing the right direction, and quite frankly, the sunsets weren’t that good that week…

But it was the 4th of July!!!...so the pictures became the fireworks instead of the sunset…again, great possibilities…I think maybe my photography skills leave something to be desired, but hey, we tried, we had some fun…and everyone will always remember the vacation I had that free wine from South Africa that no one had ever heard of before…

I hope you like the pictures…I don’t think they’re good enough to use for label art, but I’ll bet there are other people out there who could do better with the same concept…

Everyone submit their fave pictures…I’ll bet the Stormhoek crowd would enjoy them even if they don’t need a new label design… I’m looking forward to seeing some good pictures…

In my experience, projects have the best chance to succeed when they are a group effort…

P. It's kind of a long story... here goes anyway...

signed up for a geek dinner...for Stormhoek, a South African wine company...it's a big/ little marketing thing that hugh macleod came up with...read all about it here

with me so far? right...

so I'm glancing through the other people who have signed up...it's a pretty diverse crowd so far

so what is there possibly to gain from all this?...although just being amused is good enough for me...

then I notice the entry for BioBrewHaHa Seattle...interesting...read further...Life-Sciences Special Interest Group...curious...further comments..."The technology in biotech and wine are very similar..." google "userspace.com" and look for sanjay...it's a biotech instrument company, I think...they host a website for Laboratory Robotics Interest Group

Still with me? right...

this group has a Philadelphia Chapter he's just this marketing guy...quiet well known, apparently...blogs a lot, writes books, about, well, marketing stuff...

I am not sure why, but a lot (a majority?) of the blogs I read have to do with marketing...Mr. Godin, metacool, gapingvoid, some others...<br before...Interesting terrain, the flat desert plain surrounded by the rocky bits popping up around the city...hard to get used to the brown gravel desert color scheme, no grass, cactus instead of pine trees, etc...

very spread out, but I was surprised at the density in some of the developments I drove by...houses 10 feet apart, really crammed in there...I guess there's only so much room before you hit the next hill...

The conference was at the Desert Ridge Marriott Resort in Scottsdale...very nice place, beautiful inside and outside...palm courts, fountains and water features everywhere, very pleasant staff...

didn't actually stay in the resort due to oerbooking the resort, so I just had to enjoy the place vicariously at the various meeting events...

nice to see a bunch of people, lots of good seminars, but good to get home, too...
What People Hang on Their Walls...

I like to look at what people have hanging on their walls...
People have to feel pretty strongly about something before they hang it on the wall...at home, but especially at work...

something that makes a statement beyond "here's a picture of my wife/ kids" is rare...

Here's a story about 2 such statements...

"In the Land of the Blind, the One-eyed Man is King"- Bob Yerby

Bob had a plaque on his wall with this quote on it...I asked him if it was overall a postive or negative sentiment...He indicated that he felt it was very positive in that you maybe weren't that far from success...

I find myself thinking about the "Land of the Blind" part more often than not...

"The ABC's of Project Management"- Paul Buckham

A- know where you are
B- know where you want to go
C- know how you're going to get there

Paul had this on his wall printed on a piece of paper...how many people have you worked with or how many projects have you worked on that could have benefited from this fundamental description of the PM function...

Bob and Paul are both great guys and good engineers/ project managers...They were once referred to on Fluor's Financial message board as "oil patch renegades"...if that is true, then we could use a few more renegades in the industry...
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/10864970-112414966065547721?l=jfdblog.blogspot.com' alt='' I found it really funny, which is a bit peculiar considering it is a book about punctuation. It is very well written and the author has a great sense of humor. It is also very comprehensive...more than I thought I ever needed to know, but it is a fun read which move along at a good pace.

The main site for the book is here Feel free to stop by and test your puncutation skills...

On the serious side, a lot of our work consists of writing, which does not always come so easily for a lot of us...even if you strugle with the content, at least get the puncuation right!!!

I found out I use too many ellipses...which, by the way, are the 3 dot things I'm always sticking at the end of each thought...forgive me, Lynne Truss...I'm also a firm believer in the Oxford comma...boy, the stuff you didn't know!

In case you missed it, the punch line for the book is on the back of the dust jacket...it's about a panda...think about it, you'll get it...

The God Particle...

I have just finished reading "The God Particle"

What a great book!!! It is by Leon Lederman who is a very witty physicist...more about Mr. Lederman can be found <a the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?" just in case you want something to think about late at night.

I have always been interested in physics...and in particular (great pun, huh?) quantum mechanics/ particle physics...hey, we all need a hobby, right?

Anyway, this is a very well-written, well-presented history of the evolution of our knowledge of the really small particles and such that make up our world...I found this portion of the book fascinating from both a scientific and historical viewpoint ...on top of that, it's funny!

I am actually re-reading the entire book to re-visit the portions that are not as accessible as others...after all, it's about particle physics...

The disappointment of the next big Supercollider project being cancelled leaves the book end on a down note...

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it if this field (another good one...) interests you.
Static versus Dynamic a la Tom Peters

I'm a big Tom Peters fan...started with "A Passion for Excellence..." a long time ago...recently read "Re-imagine..."

I'm a regular visitor to his site and, although I'm starting to have some concerns with the content and focus, read most of his stuff...

I have never personally seen Tom speak, but I do look at his event slides...
Eye-catching- if you think ugly is eye-catching...(I guess I'm trying to be polite...but let's try to focus (for once...) on content rather than format...) click thru some of the presentations and see what I mean...

Anywho...he has a slide about Static versus Dynamic...the implication is that, in Tom's world, Static is Bad,...and Dynamic is Good...which initially, I had no problem with...who wants to be considered "static" anyway...

Then I started looking at the qualities he had listed under each category...All of the stuff under Dynamic sounds great...no problem with any of that...see below

Dynamic/ Different

Dramatic Difference
Disruptive
Insanely Great (Quality++++)
Life- (Industry-) Changing Event
Game-changing
WOW!
Surprise
Delight
Breathtaking
Punctuated Equilibrium
Market Creation

We should all be striving every day to achieve every item listed under Static...the supposedly "Bad" category...see below

Static/ Imitative

Integrity
Quality
Excellence
Continuous Improvement
Superior Service (exceeds expectations)
Completely Satisfactory Transaction
Smooth Evolution
Market Share

If that is what it means to
